Making a Sonic Team fan, final part...

In the previous blog I featured fan art of a Sonic Team character that never was. Selph was a cancelled boss character for the original NiGHTS into dreams… I speculated what the character looked like, and even that the studio turned the character into Chaos for the Sonic Adventure series. It wasn’t the only time I speculated on their characters. Not long ago my kid asked if I had seen Metal NiGHTS. I had never heard of this iteration of my favorite mascot. It turned out that Metal NiGHTS was hidden in Sonic Superstars, along with Metal Tails, Metal Amy, and more. This inspired me to create fan art on what a meeting of the characters would look like.

That illustration launched a creative rush, and I had to capitalize on it. It had been a long time since I've drawn back-to-back pieces in illustrator. I remembered that there was a smaller Mecha NiGHTS that was a hidden asset in the original game. So I absolutely had to put together a family portrait.

Then as long as I was drawing metal versions I figured there should be a Metal Reala as well. There was not a version in Sonic Superstars, but that didn't stop me from drawing it up. Some people call these little guys chibi-versions but technically they are classic Sonic proportions, rather than modern Sonic. Reala was just a hair bigger than NiGHTS in the original game, so even his metal version was a little bigger as well.

As long as I was creating versions of the robots that never existed I thought about the third “brother” from the series. I absolutely had to create an illustration for Metal Jackle. This character was much bigger than NiGHTS in the original game. He was actually about four times the size of the other hooded nightmarens.

I didn’t want to break the scale of the robots I had already drawn, so I simply made Jackle just a hair larger than Reala. I had so much fun creating these illustrations it made me wish that I knew how to create 3D models. I would love to get a 3D printed version of my little robots made. Don’t you think they look cute?

The only other sort of humanoid figure in NiGHTS into dreams... was the final boss named Wizeman. Yet this character didn't really have a body or head. He was more like a floating cloak on a platform. I didn't think it would be possible to make a Metal version of him, until one day I decided to give it a go. I won't be making Metal versions of the other characters because their proportions are already very much in line with the format. The more I look at these illustrations the more I wonder if it would be possible to remake NiGHTS into a game featuring robots that dream of breaking away from the control of Dr. Eggman. What do you think?

I was on an absolute drawing tear so I thought about what other Sonic Team character I would like to bring back. I remembered that Mecha Sonic from Sonic 2 had some great concept art. I thought it would look even better in color. I think this illustration came out great.

I figured as long as I made an illustration of the Mecha Sonic concept art I might as well render the other metal variations. Did you have a favorite metal doppelganger? I really need to get a copy of Sonic Superstars so I can see the various builds.

There was an illustration that I had been dreading for a long time. It was not the Super Pian aka the King of the Nightopians. I absolutely loved that little guy! I had mentioned him previously on the blog. He was a rare character that you could unlock in the original NiGHTS into dreams… The king would fly around the level and choose a spot to built a floating castle. It would be added to the game, and saved via the internal memory. The castle was randomly placed on the level, and would never appear in the same place twice, no matter how many times you erased, and resrtated your data! He was an incredibly cute character that I finally got around to drawing.

Rendering the king didn’t make me nervous but the castle he created did. It was all but impossible to get a clean picture of the castle from the game for my own personal notes. The original Nightopian Castle was rarely captured on screen because it was not guaranteed to ever show up in the game. Normally it wouldn’t be hard to find a YouTube clip to work from however the Sega Saturn was a 32-bit system from 30 years ago. Any existing video was low resolution. If you didn’t have a video capture card, or an emulator, and knew how to earn the Super Pian then even today it would be hard screenshot to get. The closest thing I could find was a fuzzy shot from the NiGHTS Wiki page but this model was pulled from the PS2 remake, which was not 100% console accurate. The Chinese developers did a really great job recreating the game engine, but not all the assets were accurate to their sprite counterparts.

Whenever there was a game asset that I couldn’t track down then I would challenge myself to draw a reproduction as accurately as I could. So I used every screenshot, and grainy video clip that I could find of the castle to work from. It took me a few days to finalize the design, and it’s essentially a high resolution, vector version of the sprites. There was no doubt that the Nightopian Castle was one of my most challenging drawings of the past decade. Maybe I should put it on a poster or tee shirt for the die-hard fans.

There was another game asset in NiGHTS that I always wanted to recreate. The villain Reala had a stylish logo on the ceiling of his boss battle stage. About 30 years ago my little brother said it would make a great design for a tattoo. I agreed, and finally decided it was time for me to recreate it. It was hard to find a clean screenshot, or the asset uploaded. So again I went by any scans that I could find. Making out the pattern at the bottom of the logo was the hardest part, so I mocked up a couple of different designs. I even changed the hands above the moon a little. Now I’m not saying that I am getting a tattoo with it, but I am certainly thinking about it.

When Valentine’s Day was approaching I decided to see what a pink version of NiGHTS would look like. I even added some Nightopians to round out the pic. I might do other holiday versions in the future. We already have a Christmas version, but I wonder how an autumnal NiGHTS would look like. Orange like the leaves in fall, or black like a Halloween monster? That's food for thought...

After a few weeks of drawing I decided to get out of my comfort zone, and do an illustration of NiGHTS, and Reala as cartoonish, and dynamic as I possibly could. I think the end result really showed how far I had come in the past few years.

The best part about working mainly in Adobe Illustrator is that I can always circle back to a piece and make changes to it. I think the second go round between NiGHTS and Reala works much better. What do you think? All in all it was fun creating new illustrations these past few weeks. I had Sonic Team to thank for that. They kept me motivated when work, and politics had been weighing on my mind. The library of Sega games had inspired me most of my life. It was time to express that love in art form.

To round out my Sonic Team fan art I combined the classic Sonic pose from the cover of Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast but replaced our hero. It was one of the more popular illustrations I ever uploaded to social media.

I know Jet Set Radio is not a Sonic Team game, but it is a Sega title, and one of my favorites of all-time. This will probably be the last time I draw the Sonic Adventure pose, but don't hold me to it.

I hope you enjoyed this look back at how the studio built a fan. I’d like to know if you were a fan of Sonic Team, and if you had a favorite game, or character as well. Making a Sonic Team fan, part 4...

Sonic Team had always gone above and beyond when creating new titles. Sonic, Burning Rangers, NiGHTS into dreams, and Billy Hatcher were all fantastic with unique game play elements. Like many AAA developers there were volumes of unused assets that remained on the cutting room floor as the games were each finalized. In some cases the remains of a beta stage, character, or even music could be found in the game data itself, waiting to be discovered by the community. The Sonic games had several examples of beta material being left on the Genesis cartridges. Similar things were expected for the Saturn disks, the only problem was getting to that data was hard. It took decades for home-brew programmers to get to the info, and compile it into a workable format.

In the previous blog I mentioned that Mecha NiGHTS had been uncovered during a data mine. Even more shocking was the possibility that there was a cut boss named Selph planned for the game. While combing through the data files people found all sorts of models, animations, and unused game assets, but nothing about another boss. In the logs they discovered the file names, and unused icons for the bosses. Gillwing, Clawz, Gulpo, Puffy, Jackie, Reala, and the final boss named Wizeman. For a while the only mention of an eight boss was text only. Self, sometimes spelled Selph would have appeared before the final boss. Yet there had never been any sort of concept art, or model that could be found. Until one day a single icon was isolated.

The community was split over what we were looking at. Even when there was an update to Selph following the datamine To me, and many others it was a pointy headed alien-like creature with dark eyes. Others saw a giant claw, or pincer. I began wondering how the character would have looked, and more important how this character would have fit into the game. Up until that point NiGHTS had faced many of the boss battles in head-on fights. Some bosses, like Clawz, and Gulpo required more strategy. Two other bosses, Jackie, and Reala also wore a hat similar to NiGHTS, and they could fly. If Selph were to appear just before the final boss, or even as a hidden boss, then it must have been a special encounter.

The name Selph was very significant for Sonic Team. In order to build the game the studio had to become well versed in the psychology behind dreams, and their meanings. One of the most influential psychologists that they often cited in interviews was Carl Jung. His theory of analytical psychology was very profound. He developed the idea of ways people present themselves, or mask their intents. The idea of a collective conscious, and unconscious as well as the concept of Self. Naoto Ohshima, Yuji Naka, and the Sonic Team crew became adapt at interpreting the dreams of their coworkers. They were so good at being amateur psychologists that many in the company shared a lot of personal information. Years later they realized that that they knew much more about their Sega counterparts than they should have. Talk about an HR nightmare! But I digress... I was inspired to create how I think Selph would have appeared in the game.

The original release of the game was not necessarily understood by audiences when it came out. It became something special to those that figured out what Sonic Team accomplished. It was all the more important because the game conveyed a message without one word of dialogue, or anything to translate. NiGHTS into dreams… was more than a story of boy meets girl. It dealt with anxiety, especially anxiety in kids in a way that no other game or media had ever attempted. The question that many in the community had was how would a battle agains the “Self” have played out?

I would argue that the boss battle would have worked out to more of a chase sequence. There wouldn’t have been actual punching, kicking, or tackling involved. As this was something that NiGHTS already did with every other boss battle. Instead I think the battle would have been a series of encounters. A way for the main characters to chase after their true selves. I believe that Elliot, and Claris, the human stars of the game would have each turned into their own version of NiGHTS at the end of the sequence. Then they would then have had the power to confront the big boss Wizeman in the dream world without having to rely entirely on NiGHTS.

I think this scenario made sense for a number of reasons. In the final shared stage of the game both Elliot, and Claris had to work together to free NiGHTS from a prison. After doing so they would merge, or “Dualize” with the main character. This would give each of them the powers of NiGHTS, and the ability to take down the gigantic villain themselves. In essence they needed the courage to face their own fears. I believe that Selph was going to be a distinct boy, and girl version of NiGHTS, with their own identifying colors that matched Claris, and Elliot. It made a lot more sense to me than seeing two versions of the dream jester at the end of the game.

This was the way I interpreted Self based on the game icon, but also because I had played through every Sonic Team game ever made. I understood the way the studio framed the levels, and approached their battles. Not only that but I had studied Carl Jung in my anthropology classes, it gave me an additional insight into dream personas. So what happened with Selph? Why was the boss cut? Sonic Team had a tight deadline. They needed to have a killer app ready for the launch of the 32-bit Sega Saturn console in 1995. Sadly the game wouldn’t be ready until a year after the console’s launch. Pressed for time they began seeing what they could cut. This boss, a new battle, a new 3D model were put on the chopping block. The only thing they forgot to scrub from the game data was the name, and icon.

Sega was working on the Dreamcast console, while the Saturn was still finding its legs. To many, myself included, this was the death knell for the console division, and the company as a whole. At the same time this would be a chance for Sonic Team to return to the blue blur, and bring the hedgehog into fully realized 3D. NiGHTS came out in 1996, and Sonic Adventure in 1998. Ask any AAA studio what an absurdly short turnaround time that was, especially for completely new hardware. The studio acknowledged that the Nightopians were the prototype A-Life characters that inspired the development of the Chao in Sonic Adventure. I don’t think that was the only thing the team brought over from their previous work. Selph was a great concept that deserved a second look. Sonic Team. Sonic would fight Eggman in his new adventure, but he needed a bigger opponent as whell. Perhaps a shape shifting creature that started off small, but became progressively bigger, and more dangerous as the game went on. I would argue that the studio took another look at Selph, and with a few changes turned the design into Chaos.

This was all conjecture on my part, based on a single file name, and a single game icon. I’m sticking with it though until I hear otherwise from Sonic Team members. There was more art that I had done recently based on NiGHTS, but it was not quite what you might imagine. I’ll share more of it on the next blog. Until then I want to hear about the unused content, stages, bosses, or heroes that you wish you would have gotten to see. Tell me about it in the comments section. Looking forward to Wondercon and check out these Sonic Adventure figs! - A 1UP classic from March 16, 2012

Hello friends, glad to see that you've made it to another Friday. What plans do you have for the weekend? It's my gal's 18th birthday. To celebrate my family and I will be attending the Wondercon 2012 in Anaheim. The show is being put together by the same people that organize the San Diego Comic Con. You might remember that a few years ago Anaheim was in a bidding war to host the Comic Con. Many had been saying for the past few years that the show had outgrown the SD Convention Center and was a logistical nightmare for attendees as well as sponsors.

Despite the best effort from Orange County the hosts signed up with San Diego for a few more years. However the organizers never made mention of the Wondercon. If the show does very well then they are hoping to extend it by a day or two and make it a sort of preamble to the Comic Con in the summer. Right now they have a lot of programming planned and a bunch of sponsors and floor space. We'll find out if they can handle the crowds this weekend. Thankfully the rain will keep the numbers down over the next three days, but there can't possibly be a worse smell than con funk and wet nerdboys.

As I was digging up CD's to import I came across the Sonic Adventure figures I had given my daughter. Take a look at these classic figs.

Almost all of the other action figures that I gave the little gal were loose. To mean that I had taken them out of their packaging ages ago. For some unknown reason I never took the Sonic figures out. Possibly because the series had such sentimental value to me.

It turned out to be a good thing for collectors as the original Sonic Adventure figures go for a pretty penny these days. Check out eBay and see how much a mint set of these figures go for.

Those on a budget may not be able to pick up these classics but there is an even larger set of figures that they can collect from the Toys R Us. The series is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. Figures in the Classic and Adventure styles are out in multiple sizes. Sonic fans owe it to themselves to pick up the figures before they sell out again! I hope you have a great weekend and look forward to seeing news from the Wondercon next week. If you are going then let me know so I can get a pic with you.
