Style Wars, looking at Kimberly in Street Fighter 6, and Isla from King of Fighters XIV.
I think we should have the conversation about Kimberly, about culture, and the developers at SNK, and Capcom. I had previewed Kimberly when she was leaked a month or so ago. Most of my observations turned out to be accurate. The internet has absolutely fallen in love with her, posting fan art, and cosplay pics following the reveal trailer including the updated Juri. The thing I think we have to acknowledge is that Kimberly has themes that were seen in SNK characters much earlier.

That vertical suplex move is called an Izuna Drop/Izuna Otoshi. It was popularized by the manga Ninpu Kamui Gaiden (1969) and has since been a part of the arsenal, in one form or another, of various fighting game shinobis (it was first used by SF's Balrog, btw).
ReplyDeletesparrohawk, Thanks for the insight. I wasn't sure if Balrog was the first game character to use the move, I was betting it would have been in a 2D Ninja Gaiden game first. That's why I credited the first 3D version to Kage.
ReplyDeleteCan't believe I just discovered your blog, what a well thought out piece! Really interesting references you picked up on.
ReplyDeleteFor me, I was a big fan of Isla from the get-go, loving her spray paint use and colourful design (I stayed a fan because of gameplay), but Kimberly just shows off what a really 'fresh' character design can be. Kind of puts Isla to shame when Kimberly's personality just oozes off her design with every action, voice line and move. You were absolutely spot-on with SNK often going for surface-level representation or ideas, and I would have said the same for Capcom before but they've gotten a lot better recently!
Sy, thanks for the kind words. I think the reception of SF6 might give SNK the motivation to step up their game as well. I hope you get a chance to go back through my older posts, you might find something new, and unique.
DeleteHi! Sorry, to hijack the current argument, but I remember reading your thoughts and analysis on Street Fighter design as far back as to the Capcom Unity blog posts. I wanted to know if those older blogs have been saved somewhere, or if they're on this blog here. I'd love to give them a re-read.
ReplyDeleteThanks again, always enjoyed reading your stuff.
Phtm_Miria, the majority of my old Capcom-Unity blogs are on here. Some of them I combined with older 1UP posts, or folded them into a new series. I do have other saved 1UP blogs that I will edit, and post here as well. They're not all fighting game related. Anyhow thanks for visiting. I do have some upcoming posts on SF6, and more.
DeleteAlright, thanks for the info! I'll look those old posts up once I can.
